A transom is the horizontal beam just above the door. Transom windows are windows located just above the transom. They can be rectangular-shaped or in segmented, arched shapes. They usually add color, texture, light and height. They are simple to decorate, and it is fairly easy to create one in an existing space. - One attractive and simple way to decorate a transom is to use an antique stained-glass window. Find one that is a little bit smaller than your transom’s frame. You can screw at least two hooks into the wall studs on the outside of the window and hang the stained glass inside your transom using a thin chain. Most antique stores carry a large selection of antique stained-glass windows. If you can't find one in a store, check online.
- If you want an interesting look, there are products you can purchase that embed materials into an eco-resin (similar to plexiglass), adding a creative appearance. Some of the materials include fabrics, flowers, grass blades, bamboo rings and over a thousand more options. You can customize the window using a choice of colors, or give the manufacturer your own color to match.
- Another décor idea for your transom is to create a curtain of hanging crystals that fall at different heights along the glass of the window. Cut varying lengths of fishing line that are less than the window height plus three inches (for tying). At one end of each strand, tie a loop using a crimping bead. Thread the fishing line through crystal beads and finish the opposite end using another crimping bead. Take the extra three inches and tie it around a piece of bamboo or a branch (approximately the width of the transom) that acts as a curtain rod.
