Insecurity

• Without proper communication, couples are unable to reassure one another, exacerbating existing insecurities.
  
  

Secrecy

• Lack of communication means that fewer problems are being vetted and discussed ... and that some, by default, are being kept secret from one partner or the other.
  
  

Trust

• Unspoken words indicate a lack of trust, as each partner is unwilling to open up about certain feelings.
  
  

Distance

• Couples who don't speak to each other become more distant by default ... and may eventually find others in whom they can confide more readily. Becoming more distant will likely lead to loss of intimacy, which can really make a marriage suffer.
  
  

Complacency

• Without communication, the marriage cannot grow and evolve to adapt to new circumstances. Complacency eventually sets in and with it comes stagnation.
