Understanding Children and Allergies

Though we see the clich over and over in movies and shows, the truth is that many new parents are often clueless about how to take care of a baby. Activities like breastfeeding, diaper changing, and burping are all new. And just when they think it can't get any worse, the complication of solid feeding looms its head as a challenge.

Solid feeding is not only difficult because parents have to teach their kids how to eat and swallow and to get used to the utensils, but it is also tricky because parents have to be aware of what types of food to feed their kids. They have to understand children and allergies or and get to know which foods are highly allergic before solid feeding begins.

The truth is that there are many types of food that infants cannot have till they're past a certain age. These are the highly allergic foods which young immune systems cannot deal with yet, especially if the child ends up being allergic to the food. So once it is time to begin introducing the different foods, parents are often told to go slowly, introducing one thing at a time, making sure that the child does not exhibit any allergic reaction, especially violent allergic reactions.

Because these foods are introduced slowly, many parents will know what they're kid is allergic to by the time the kid is around five years old. Most parents will simply keep their kids away from the problematic foods and teach them to stay away from them when they're older. This is because of the misconception that all allergies will stay with a child or person for life.

Many allergies can be actually be outgrown and many times parents can help their kid outgrow the allergy well before they hit their teen years. This can be done with doctor's advice and guidance. Depending on how bad the reaction is, parents can slowly expose their child to the allergen little by little, helping the body build a tolerance for the food. This process can take a few months, or sometimes a few years, but in many cases the child will emerge free from allergies.

Understanding children and allergies not only involves knowing what foods your child can eat and when they begin eating them, but it also involves knowing how to make food allergies better or easier for your child by helping them overcome the problem altogether. Just remember that the entire process must be done with the help of a doctor. There are some allergies that are so severe that building a tolerance is out of the question.

Children prone to allergies should get a lot of fresh air and exercise to make their bodies stronger. Consider taking your child on vacation to a log cabin resort. Small log homes are often situated in areas where there is lots of fresh air and lots to do, both are great for your child!
