Ideas For a Rock Patio

    • A rock patio can be a great way to get the most out of your property. It provides the opportunity to better enjoy the landscape where you live, provide an alternative place for hosting guests and add value to your house. If you plan on building a rock patio, there are many things to consider.

    Placement

    • Before building your rock patio, think long and hard about placement. Situate the patio to provide the best views of the landscaping surrounding your house. Consider the amount of sunlight the patio will get. You'll want to enjoy the sun on cooler days, but also find shade on hotter days. Take into account any future landscaping plans for your property. Consider, too, the possibility of having more than one rock patio separated by vegetation and connected by a system of walkways. This takes advantage of different views and atmospheres on your property.

    Materials

    • Rock patios can be made from different materials. The material you choose will have an effect on the look and feel of your patio. Flagstone may be a good option to consider because of its durability. Flagstones are typically large and flat, meaning a nice level surface and less shifting of the stones. Flagstones might be an inexpensive option, as well, because you can gather the stones yourself in creeks and riverbeds. Another option is loose filling, which involves spreading several inches of pea gravel, crushed rock or other pebble-sized rocks across the surface of the patio. For this option, you will need to have proper edging to keep the gravel enclosed in the patio area.

    Finishing Touches

    • Though you can make a perfectly good rock patio without any extra add-ons, you might want something to liven it up a bit. The addition of water, through a fountain or small pond, enhances the atmosphere of your patio. If shade is not plentiful, create some of your own with an arbor or similar wooden structure where vines and other plants can grow. A fireplace may help you maximize the use of your patio as well, offering heat in cold weather and a place to cook outside. While all of these are finishing touches, planning for them will affect how you go about building your patio.
