How to Lay a Baby Down in a Cot
- 1). Lower the side of the cot, if it is able to be lowered. If it is not adjustable, you will have to lift the baby over the side at bedtime. Remove all stuffed toys and blankets.
- 2). Dress your baby in fire-retardant pajamas and a sleep sack for bed until he is old enough to move into a toddler bed -- around 2 years old.
- 3). Cradle your baby in your arms as you approach the cot. Hold her close to you.

Break the cradle hold -- both arms crossed under the baby with his head in the crook of one arm and his legs in the other -- by sliding your left hand under his head and shoulders while your right hand supports his bottom and your right arm supports his legs. - 5

Lower the baby into the cot placing her on her back in the center of the mattress. Remember to support the head at all times. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that healthy babies be placed on their backs to sleep, not their stomachs. - 6

Raise the side of the crib back up, if you have a drop-side crib. You do not know when the baby will decide to pull up for the first time.
