How to Train My Mastiff

    • 1). It does not matter what it is you are trying to train your mastiff, you must start by being confident in your abilities and staying in control of the situation. You must use a voice of power, not anger, when you speak to your dog. This tells her you mean business, but it does not get her riled up.

    • 2). Do not yell at your dog. If she does the wrong thing, tell her again what you would like her to do, then show her. For "sit" you can gently push down on her hindquarters to get her to sit after saying the word.

    • 3). Keep at it on a daily basis until you can ask your dog what you want her to do and she does it. You will want her to "sit," "stay" and "come," at the least. Teaching tricks such as "roll over" may take a little extra time and patience.

    • 4). Never punish your dog by hitting her or rubbing her nose in anything. This teaches her nothing and makes her live in fear of you when you are the one she should love the most. Dogs are very affectionate creatures, and they enjoy learning and a game of fetch now and then.
