PEI - Exploring Off the Beaten Path

PEI is a popular tourist destination.
Thousands of tourists visit annually and arrive by plane, ferry, car, bus, and cruise ships.
When visitors arrive on this tiny, picturesque island, they like to check out the major attractions.
As well, many visitors like to explore 'off the beaten path' locations.
These hidden treasures can offer some of the best sights and sounds in the province.
With its rolling hills, pastoral landscape, scenic trails and back roads, as well as endless miles of beaches, the island has many interesting nooks and crannies.
Back Road Folk Art qualifies as one of those 'off the beaten path' spots.
The name is self-explanatory and refers to a gallery and studio of folk art located down a back road in Lauretta in western PEI.
Visiting Back Road Folk Art is an experience like no other.
Where else would you find the world's largest working hand-held eggbeater installed in front of a house? You cannot beat this item.
This eggbeater made it into the Guinness Book of World Records.
How many other museums have a section devoted to skunks? This exhibit explains why skunks came to the area and never left the island.
With a guessing wall, tons of zany carvings, and very unusual furniture, Kerras Jeffery's museum displays his collection of unusual things - the result of years of yard sale finds.
What most people might view as junk, Jeffery can turn it into a unique piece of folk art.
He will even help you make your own folk art such as a wench-tail fish made from a block of wood.
As comical as many of Jeffrey's pieces are, this place is not all about whimsy.
It takes serious talent to create something from nothing - or at least - nothing in the 'usual' sense.
As well, Jeffrey had a purpose in building this museum.
He wanted to honor his ancestors and the history of the region.
Jeffery thinks that those skunks had the right idea.
Jeffery believes that they came to the island as tourists and never wanted to leave this island paradise.
Just like every other visitor who comes to PEI! Besides Back Road Folk Art, other 'off the beaten path' places include natural treasures as well as interesting sites throughout the province (unique museums, cozy restaurants, one-of-a-kind businesses).
Cabot Beach Provincial Park is one of the most beautiful and peaceful natural attractions.
Visitors will find a quiet beach but there is plenty of room for picnics as well as an ample parking area.
The lighthouse at North Cape was one of the first on the island.
North Cape has the reputation of being one of the windiest spots in Canada.
With advanced windmill technology at work on the cape, visitors can drop into the Wind Energy Interpretive Centre and learn about creating electricity by harnessing the wind.
In this beautiful province, vacationers feel as free as the wind and experience a sense of relaxation in this island paradise.
Visitors can find all types of accommodations on the island - from luxury hotel suites and 'bed and breakfast' establishments to charming cottages and secluded cabins.
The friendly staff at PEI cottages and hotels await your arrival.
