    • 1). Look for Manila clams in shallow seawater just underneath the sand on beaches with a mixture of gravel, mud, sand and shell. You can identify the location of the clams by small holes in the sand. Manila clams can be found in Washington State, Southeastern Alaska and Northern California. Clams are available throughout the year.

    • 2). Rake or hand-pick clams with a shell size of 2.5 to 3 inches.

    • 3). Inspect the clam shells and discard any with chipped, cracked or broken shells. If a shell is open, tap it to check whether the clam is alive. If the shell doesn't snap closed, the clam is dead and should be discarded.

    • 4). Place collected clams in an open box or bucket so they can breathe. Keep the container at a temperature below 45 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 5). Store clams in an open container at the bottom of your refrigerator, covered by a wet tea towel to keep them moist. Keep the refrigerator's temperature between 34 and 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
