How to Adjust a Technics SL-Q3 Tonearm
- 1). Attach a stylus protector if available and move the tonearm toward the center spindle.
- 2). Locate the arm lift adjustment screw at the base of the tonearm and determine which way to adjust the height. The factory settings are between 5 mm and 10 mm of distance between the stylus tip and the record when the cueing lever is in the up position. This adjustment is necessary when the cartridge has been changed to a different size stylus or fine tuning is required to improve playback.
- 3). Turn the adjustment screw clockwise to lower the tonearm or turn the screw counterclockwise to raise the tonearm. While pushing the arm lift down, turn the adjustment screw in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction using the screwdriver.
- 4). Check to see if the distance between the stylus tip and the record is between 5 mm and 10 mm with the cueing lever in the up position.
- 1). Locate the start position adjustment screw on the base of the tonearm assembly. Remove the rubber cap covering the tonearm start position adjustment screw.
- 2). Determine which way the adjustment screw should be turned. Turn the screw clockwise if the stylus tip sets down outside of the record when in automatic start mode. If the stylus tip sets down in a position on the record, but after the start, turn the screw in a counterclockwise direction.
- 3). Use the screwdriver to turn the screw in the appropriate direction and adjust to the desired position.
- 1). Remove the turntable mat and locate the return position adjustment screw on the tonearm itself.
- 2). Determine the necessary adjustments to the tonearm return position. Turn the screw clockwise if the tonearm returns to the beginning without finishing the record and counterclockwise if it fails to return after playing the entire record.
- 3). Use the screwdriver to adjust the screw clockwise or counterclockwise as needed.
- 1). Remove the stylus protector (if detachable), avoiding contact with the stylus tip. Avoid any contact between the stylus tip and the turntable mat or turntable base during the adjustment of the horizontal zero balance.
- 2). Free the tonearm from the arm rest by releasing the arm clamp and lifting the tonearm. Determine which way to rotate the balance weight so that the tonearm will remain parallel to the turntable when released. Clockwise will lower the stylus head and counterclockwise will raise the stylus head.
- 3). Rotate the balance weight, located on the end of the tonearm opposite the stylus, clockwise or counterclockwise until the tonearm floats freely and is parallel to the turntable base. This indicates that the tonearm is approximately horizontally balanced.
- 4). Refasten the tonearm with the arm clamp temporarily.
- 5). Locate the stylus-pressure ring directly in front of the balance weight. Hold the balance weight with one hand to keep it from turning. Turn the stylus-pressure ring with your other hand until the "0" on the ring is aligned to the center line etched on the rear shaft of the tonearm between the stylus-pressure ring and the base of the tonearm. The horizontal zero balance is now set.
- 6). Position the turntable so that the tonearm balance weight is facing you, with the stylus end pointing away from you.
- 7). Turn the balance weight clockwise to adjust the stylus pressure to the desired setting. This setting will depend on a variety of factors such as stylus specifications, record recording level and temperature. The correct setting for the original stylus included with this turntable is 1.75 g.
