Infection

• Myristica sebifera, also known as Brazilian ucuuba, is used as an herbal and homeopathic remedy for infections such as abscesses, fistulas and ear infections. The remedy is said to have antiseptic qualities, as well as encouraging fluids to drain from infections in a process called suppuration. Homeopathic doctors have said that using this herbal remedy may keep doctors from lancing or cutting abscesses or fistulas to drain them.
  
  

Inflammation

• According to homeopathic doctors, myristica sebifera is also said to reduce inflammation of the skin. It also reduces inflammation or swelling of the subcutaneous connective tissue underneath the skin, a condition known as cellulitis. The remedy also helps with periostitus, or swelling of the membrane that surrounds bones.
  
  

Other Compounds

• The Virola sebifera tree also produces other compounds with medical and religious uses in Central and South America. A hallucinogenic compound called dimethyltryptamine, or DMT, is found in the bark of the Virola sebifera tree. Dimethyltryptamine is a compound similar to tryptophan that acts like serotonin in the brain, producing a psychedelic state. DMT derived from the bark of the Virola sebifera tree is used by indigenous people in Central and South America as part of religious ceremonies and to exorcise ghosts. Fat is also pressed from the seeds of the tree for use in candles and soaps.
  
  

Virola Sebifera Tree

• Virola sebifera is also known as the velario colorado, and it is a medium-sized tropical tree. Its leaves are broad and flat, with bluish undersides and visible red veins. The virola grows best with other trees in old growth forests, and saplings can often be found in shady areas.
