Home sewing is more than just purchasing a pattern and thread.
If you don't have the proper equipment with which to finish this garment you are making, you will get discouraged and feel that you have wasted your money in a hurry! The most essential and elemental piece of equipment for the home sewer is the sewing machine.
If you don't know all the parts and the purpose of all the dials and knobs on that piece of equipment, you are not able to utilize your sewing machine to its fullest potential.
It takes time to learn this concept, but it is well worth learning.
The other essential thing to know is about the sizes of needles and what size is for what type of garment.
If your needle size is wrong, you may experience puckers in the finished garment or runs in the material.
The home sewer may think that is the most unproductive time that was ever spent if they don't know the differences in sewing machine needle sizes.
You can't depend on the salesperson in the sewing material store because they may forget to tell you or may not even know themselves about the proper size of needle to use on the sewing material you have just purchased.
Sewing thread is another thing to pay attention to - if you want your seams to stay together on your finished garment, you must pay attention to the sewing thread you purchase before starting this garment.
There are lots of threads available today - the choice is yours!Make sure that you choose a sewing thread that will last and is compatible with your sewing material as well as being the right color and weight for your material.
What types of pins should you be seeking? As with needles, different kinds of pins have different purposes, so thought must be put into the proper pins to ensure that you have no small pinholes in your sewing material.
What about marking tools and/or measuring tools? These are essential to the home sewer for obvious reasons.
Seam rippers are all quite standard, but shears or scissors are a different matter.
One of the differences between scissors and shears is that scissors have both handles the same size; shears have one handle larger than the other.
If these scissors or shears are joined with a rivet, I would not recommend purchasing these, I would go for scissors or shears with an adjustable screw - if these screws are kept oiled, they will cut nicer and not be so hard to work with after time.
A rivet tends to feel tighter making the cutting process a struggle after a while (stiffness), whereas a screw which is oiled and can be loosened, will not tighten making the cutting job much easier.
If you have ever paid attention to a tailored item of clothing or read a pattern, they all say to press the seams open.
In this case, do you have an iron? You'd be surprised how many people do not own an iron, but if you are a home sewer, this is one of the top tools of the trade! The iron a home sewer should have is a steam iron.
You may not think you will ever use this iron, but you will! This iron will serve the purpose of pressing which is essential to the home sewer.
Those are just some of the tools needed by the beginning home sewer that is serious about home sewing.
You may find more as you shop around for some of these items.
But before you begin anything at all in the home sewing department, make sure you know the parts of your sewing machine and what those dials and knobs are for - you'll never regret it!Know how to oil this home sewing machine to enable your sewing machine to give you years of use! Do you know the parts of your sewing machine even if it is a computerized model?
