- 1). Choose a shape and style. Select among clogs, sneakers and boots depending on the type of work you are doing and your workplace safety requirements. Consider a clog or sneaker for less-harsh working conditions or more-casual jobs. Opt for full, lace-up boots for more risky environments or jobs requiring additional protection. Know that boots are the most practical option for safety and all-weather wear.
- 2). Choose a shoe material and tread. Be sure that leather and fabrics are waterproofed, or that you can buy a spray-on water-proofing material so your safety shoes won't be ruined on the job. Turn over the shoes and check that the tread is durable and thick, with ridges to support balance and avoid slippage. The best non-slip soles are usually rubber. Check the packaging for safety certification and specific information on safety statistics, such as steel strength. This can be just as important for your safety as non-slip features.

Ask a salesperson to help you, or check at home that your toes rest comfortably near the front of the shoe without too much space for moving or too much proximity to the steel. Remember that balance can be related to fit; the safest non-slip shoe is the one that not only has a good tread but also a good fit for your feet.
