How to Install a Cable Deck Railing

    • 1). Divide the distance between the deck and the bottom of top rail by five. This will give you four cable heights. For example: If it is 30" high 30 divide by 5 is 6. Measuring from the floor mark 6", 12", 18" and 24" on the inside edge of each end post. Use a chalk line to transfer these marks to intermediate posts (if there are any). Square each mark across the side of each post and mark the center.

    • 2). Pre-drill holes for eye-screws in each center mark on each end post. Install eye-screws with channel lock pliers. Drill holes all the way though intermediate posts. Make these holes slightly larger than the diameter of the cable to make it easy to string it through.

    • 3). Make a 6" bend in one end of the first cable and put through the lowest eye-screw on one end. Tighten cable clamp over bend with a socket wrench. The ratcheting action makes this much easier than using pliers or a C-wrench. Turn both screws of a turnbuckle to the longest position (don't take the screws out). Hook turnbuckle to eye-screw at other end post. Put a cable clamp on the cable and let it hang (you can't get it on afterwords).Thread cable through eye of turnbuckle and pull tight. Tighten cable clamp over bend. Turn the turnbuckle until the cable is nice and tight.

    • 4). Trim off excess cable. Repeat these steps for the other three heights.
