How Much to Tip a Hairdresser for the Holiday?

    Function

    • Tipping serves several functions. It provides a concrete way to say thank you to your hairdresser. On the other side of the coin, tips are helpful during the more economically difficult holiday season. Tips enable a hairdresser to close the gap a bit and truly celebrate.

    Time Frame

    • Since some hairdressers truly use the holiday tips to get through the expensive holiday season, feel free to tip anytime between Thanksgiving and New Year's. This time frame also enables you to spread out tips throughout the season to make it a little less painful on your wallet.

If you have recently started with a new hairdresser, you may give a smaller tip and/or gift than one with which you have a long-term relationship.

    Amount

    • Holiday tips for hairdressers are normally equal to the cost of one cut. According to CNN's Money page, if you are a frequent client you may consider a tip of at least one cut, or between $20 and $100. A small token gift to go along with the tip would also be good. By using the rule of thumb of the cost of one cut, you avoid dealing with regional tip differences.

    Considerations

    • Remember that a tip for a hairdresser is a way of saying thank you. Martha Stewart's site points out, "For a $40 tip, use two 20s. If you're tipping 100 bucks, go with a $100 bill. Using the largest note possible indicates that you took time to prepare your gesture, rather than rooting around in your wallet (or between your couch cushions). Similarly, make like Grandma and request nice crisp cash at the bank."

Her site quotes Stacie Krajchir's "The Itty Bitty Guide to Tipping", ""Make it personal by placing it in an envelope with a handwritten card."

    Misconceptions

    • Hairdressers sometimes get lost in the gift shuffle because people feel they tip them all year long. One tip has nothing to do with the holiday gift.

Also keep in mind, that if your economic situation does not allow you to follow the norm, the most important part is to express your thanks, not the amount you say thank you with.
