    • 1). Open the Start menu. Type "cmd" into the search field. This will open the command prompt window.

    • 2). Type "netstat -b" into the command prompt window and press the Enter key. This command will display the IP addresses associated with all programs currently engaged in Internet connections. The list will update every five seconds, giving you a real-time look at what IP addresses your computer is sending information to. Look for any IP addresses or program names that you cannot easily identify. Copy the IP addresses down carefully. You may wish to take a screenshot of the command prompt window for future reference.

    • 3). Type "tracert" into the command prompt window, followed by the IP address you wish to trace. For example, if you want more information on IP address 204.14.90.25, enter "tracert 204.17.90.25" into the command prompt window. This will display various identifying information, including the name of the IP address' Internet Service Provider.

Alternately, you can visit the Network Solutions website and perform a WHOIS search to find the IP address' ISP.

    • 4). Shut down your computer. Contact the ISP company that was identified in Step 3. Provide them with the IP address and alert them of the problem. Depending on the severity of the situation, you may wish to report to your local FBI office. You can also file an online report with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center.
