South Texas Scholarships
- Students residing in the 22 counties making up south Texas may apply for the South Texas STARS program, whether they attend community college, a four-year institution, or graduate school. Both full and part-time students are eligible. Students must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents, with a verifiable minimum five-year South Texas residency requirement. Applicants do not have to attend a school in South Texas to qualify. Scholarships range from $350 to $3,500 for the 2010-11 academic year.
- Students at South Texas University may qualify for the state's Tuition Equalization Grants, which provides funds based on financial need. Grants are limited to nonprofit, private institutions of higher learning in the state. For the 2010-11 academic year, the maximum award is $3,808, although very low-income students may receive up to $5,712. Financial aid offices at each college determine student eligibility for the program. Unless exempt, all students receiving Tuition Equalization Grants must register for the Selective Service.
- Texas State University, formerly Southwest Texas State University, offers eligible students the Bobcat Promise. Entering full-time freshmen whose family's adjusted gross income is less than $25,000 may apply for the scholarship, which pays all tuition and fees. Applicants must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Students must be Texas residents. Annual scholarship renewal depends on students maintaining a minimum 2.0 GPA, completing at least 15 credit hours in both fall and spring semesters, submitting the annual FAFSA and not exceeding family adjusted gross income limits.
- Texas Southern University offers various departmental scholarships. These include the Computer Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Program scholarship for students majoring in these fields. For the 2011-12 academic year, this scholarships awards $3,125 for entering students with a high school GPA of 3.3 and a minimum SAT score of 1000. The President's Award of $10,000 per year goes to a high school valedictorian, while the Provost's Award of $8,000 per year is given to a high school salutatorian.
