How to Remove CV Axles
- 1). Park the vehicle on a flat, level surface. Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels of the vehicle for stability. Loosen the lug nuts from both of the front wheels with a lug wrench.
- 2). Raise the vehicle with a floor jack and place jack stands underneath the vehicle’s frame for support. Finish removing the lug nuts and dismount both front wheels from the vehicle.
- 3). Remove the bolts holding the caliper to the rotor with a socket wrench. Pull the caliper off the rotor and suspend it in mid-air with mechanic’s wire.
- 4). Pry away the locking tabs on the spindle nut with a slotted screwdriver. Loosen and remove the spindle nut with a socket wrench and breaker bar. Pull the rotor away from the spindle.
- 5). Separate the lower control arm from the damper fork, using a socket wrench. Remove the cotter pin and separate the lower control-arm ball joint from the steering knuckle, using a tie rod-end puller.
- 6). Move the knuckle and hub outward until the drive axle comes free. Pry the drive axle away from the transmission with a slotted screwdriver, then remove the CV axle from the vehicle. Repeat the procedure for the other CV axle.
