What Vitamins Do Our Eyelashes Need to Grow?

You may have noticed that your eyelashes have a relatively short growth cycle. The average growth cycle lasts approximately 30 to 45 days. There are many variables that prevent our eyelashes growing, some of these include; Toxins, allergic reactions, eye infections, a thyroid problem, constant eye rubbing, sun radiation, medical conditions and other certain medications. All of these conditions can contribute to eyelash breakage and prevent eyelash growth. The rate that your eyelashes grow is determined by the genetics you are made up of, but there are certain nutrients you can make sure you get on a daily basis to help support eyelash growth.

Vitamin B-3
Vitamin B-3, which is also known as niacin, stimulates eyelash growth. The vitamin gets hard to work and eliminates dry and brittle eyelashes, whilst working to improve blood flow to your hair follicles. The vitamin also aids in cellular reproduction, prevents your eyelashes from falling out and helps your body metabolize keratin, which is a protein that supports hair growth.

You can get vitamin B-3 from some of the foods you eat. Foods that generally tend to contain this vitamin include beef liver, salmon, tilapia, tuna, sunflower seeds, peanuts, mushrooms and asparagus.

Vitamin C
The antioxidant Vitamin C is best known for strengthening your immune system, however it can also do wonders for protecting your eyelashes from infections, toxins and diseases. All of these things can prevent hair growth. By ensuring you are getting enough Vitamin C in your diet you will find that your eyelashes are more hydrated. You will also notice that the healing process of your eyelashes improves whilst hair follicle inflammation is decreased. As if that wasn't enough, Vitamin C repairs hair follicle damage, aids in collagen production and lowers your risk of eyelash breakage.

Again, the best source of vitamin C comes from the foods you eat so make sure you eat oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, cranberries, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, pineapples, tomatoes, and kale as these are all Vitamin C rich foods.

Vitamin E
Vitamin E is an antioxidant that improves your immune system function and protects your hair follicles from damaging free-radicals. These free-radicals can prevent your eyelashes from growing. The vitamin E your body receives has so many purposes and functions; it transports blood and oxygen to your hair follicles, reduces hair follicle inflammation, encourages hair growth, eliminates dry and brittle eyelashes, repairs damaged hair follicles, aids in cellular reproduction and lowers your risk of eyelash breakage.

Foods that contain good levels of vitamin E in them include almonds, hazelnuts, kale, spinach, sunflower seeds, safflower oil, blueberries, peanut butter and avocados.

Vitamin H
Also know as biotin, Vitamin H encourages eyelash growth. It also increases blood flow to your hair follicles, thickens your eyelashes, prevents your eyelashes from drying and falling out, and improves the condition of your eyes and eyelashes. It does this by helping your body to absorb nutrients such as fats, amino acids and carbohydrates; these are all needed to stimulate and maintain healthy eyelashes

When you go shopping make sure you fill your trolley with soybeans, bananas, mushrooms, sardines, eggs, walnuts, beans, black-eyed peas and peanut butter as all of these foods contain generous helpings of vitamin H.

Calcium
When we think of calcium, many will remember that it does help to grow our fingernails and keeps our bones nice and strong. It works in the same way for our eyelashes. Calcium is a mineral that aids in eyelash growth, helps lengthen your eyelashes, and prevents eyelash breakage.

If you suffer from hypothyroidism, which is where you suffer from hair loss because your thyroid gland no longer produces enough hormones to regulate your body's metabolic rate and blood calcium levels, then calcium can help prevent this also.

We all know milk is great for calcium, but you can also get lots of the calcium goodness from yogurt, cheese, almonds, peas, okra, collard greens, salmon, tofu and sardines.
