Eliminating Lawn Moss

    • 1). Rake the moss from your lawn with a thatching rake. Rake the moss into a pile to break the moss apart. Place the moss into a garbage bag or in a compost pile.

    • 2). Pull the moss out of the lawn with your hands. If the rake does not remove all of the moss, you will need to pull it from the ground. Wear gloves during the removal and place the moss into garbage bags.

    • 3). Water the lawn less or avoid watering it completely. Moss thrives in moist areas, and allowing the moss to dry out will kill it.

    • 4). Test the soil in your lawn with a pH testing kit. Moss thrives in acidic soil, which will have a low pH level. Increase the soil pH by adding lime. Follow the application directions on the lime to apply it properly.

    • 5). Cut back tree foliage in the affected areas. The tree foliage will block sunlight, which prevents healthy turf from growing. Increasing the sunlight will choke the moss and remove it from your lawn.

    • 6). Apply a moss herbicide to the lawn. The commercial herbicide will kill the moss, and you will then need to remove the dead plant material from the lawn. Always follow the instructions on the herbicide to apply it properly.

    • 7). Apply grass seed to the bare areas. The grass seed will grow in the soil and make the lawn look pleasant again. Cover the grass seeds with commercial potting soil to protect them. Fill in low spots in your yard with soil to prevent water from sitting.
