How to Service a Mercruiser Lower Unit
- 1). Park the boat and trailer on a flat level surface.
- 2). Place a container under the drive unit to capture the used fluid. Have someone observe while you lower the stern drive to make sure it does not hit anything. Leave it tilting slightly upward to allow enough room to access the drain plug with a screwdriver.
- 3). Protect your hands with a pair of latex gloves. Locate the lower drain plug in front of the propeller on the port, or left, side. It is under the front lower side of the gear cone. Remove the screw with a large flat screwdriver.
- 4). Locate the vent screw on the same side at the upper portion of the drive and remove it. Allow all of the fluid to drain into the container.
- 5). Examine the lubricant. If it is a milky color, water has entered the system. Contact a marine mechanic immediately.
- 6). Attach the stern drive oil pump to a container of new lubricant. Insert the end of the hose into the lower drain opening with your fingers and hold it in place with one hand. Pump the lubricant with the other. Replace the screw after the entire quart has been pumped into the drive. Place the pump on the second container, remove the screw, and pump additional fluid into the drive until you notice it escaping out the vent opening. Remove the pump hose and replace the lower plug. Replace the upper vent plug and wipe off the excess fluid with a shop towel.
- 7). Remove the container of used fluid and dispose of it properly. Lower the drive until it reaches a 90 degree angle with the ground for long term storage.
