A weighmaster is a specific individual who weighs materials from trucks, boats and ships that are transporting goods around the country. Every state has slightly different requirements for the weighmaster position, and each job is slightly different in its job description and duties. Florida state weighmasters have the duties of a weighmaster as well as the typical duties of a cashier. - A weighmaster weighs the loaded and unloaded trucks before the trucks leave and when they enter the business location, and they also weigh the cargo from ships and boats at ports in Florida. The weighmaster must ensure that the scale is accurate according to national standards and that every measurement is included in the weighing process. The weighmaster ensures that no cheating is occurring in the business, either on the customer or the business side.
- Weighmasters write or print the scale tickets that include all of the information relating to the weighing of the trucks, ships and commodities. For example, in the state of Florida, the ticket is a statement that shows the weight, measurements and count of the items being shipped in the truck or ship or that have arrived in the truck or ship. These are official documents that have the weighmaster's license information, the date and a signature.
- Florida weighmasters deal with customers directly and work in cashier positions as well as in the weighmaster position. In other words, they take the payment for goods and services and balance the cash drawer after every shift. The additional duties of cashier are typically not the responsibilities of weighmasters in other states.
