The misery of management

Why is management such a miserable task for so many people?

The truth is that managing people well is a real skill. But many people, who are doing that job, fail to realise this because they are focussing on their technical skills.

So what happens is you find that you do it badly and end up causing yourself all kinds of unnecessary problems.

Recruiting the wrong people

All managers with any recruitment responsibilities need to know how to interview successfully. This is not as easy as you might think. It's not about having a cosy chat.

Recruitment is about being clear exactly what you need doing in the job and what kind of person you need to do it.

Once you have identified that, you then need to select someone who fits the bill.

We have all misjudged people over the years. How many people have you met who you thought were great at first and then realised they were unreliable? How many have you met who you did not take to initially and then they became good friends?

If you want to know how to interview successfully you can learn.

Getting the right people drastically reduces the chances of problem later.

Dealing with problems promptly

Managers who do not like managing usually leave problems till they have turned into disasters. They put off dealing with them either because they think it will be awful or because they do not know how to tackle the individual. (Or both.)

There are often ways of tackling these problems that make them easy. If you have issues with people not turning up to work and taking too much time off, get "Attendance Management Tips".

These will walk you through exactly what you need to do and take all the misery and unpleasantness out of the situation.

In "Attendance Management Tips" you will discover how to broach the situation and what to say. You will even find out how to respond to the kinds of answers you are likely to get.

If you have problems with performance issues, you need to find out how to deal with poor performance.  Again, the key is tackling it early if you possibly can, before it becomes a serious problem.

In "How to Deal With Poor Performance" you will find simple steps that take you quickly and easily through the difficult landscape of performance problems.

You will often find there are very easy solutions to performance issues. Sometimes it is a simple as making sure an individual has clear objectives. Other times you need to make sure they are getting the right feedback.

Just working on these two basics will save you a lot of difficulty.

Management doesn't have to be misery

As with all things, it's the preparation that counts. In this case, it's preparing properly so you get the right people and then, if there are problems, preparing effectively so that dealing with them is quick and easy and you can get them resolved without pain.
