Box And Whisker Plot
A Box and Whisker plot is used to calculate the median of given set of numbers. Box and Whisker Plot are rectangular plots made on the box and whisker graph. A box and whisker graph displays the set of data given, in such a way that it shows the range in which most of the numbers in the data set are present.
How to Create a Box and Whisker Plot?
To know how to create a box and whisker plot, let us go through the following steps:
1.Once the set of data is given, the first step is to check if the data are in ascending order. If they are not arranged already, then arrange the data in the ascending order.
2.Find the median i.e. the middle number of the data. The median divides the given set of data into two halves. To find the median, check how many numbers are there in the given set of data. If the number count is odd, then the middle number is the median. When calculating sub-medians, this number need not be included. If the number count is even, the median is the average of the two middle numbers. In this case, the two middle numbers will be included with the left side numbers and right side numbers respectively to find the sub-medians.
3.The next step is to find the sub-medians the lower median and the upper median. It means the next step is to divide the data into quarters. Take the two halves of the numbers separated by median. Take the numbers on the left side and find their median. Similarly, take the numbers on the right side and find their median. These two medians are called the lower median and higher median respectively. The three middle points one median and the two sub-medians has now divided the whole set of data into quarters or quartiles. The quartiles are indicated by Q subscripted by the number. Q1 denotes first sub-median, Q2 denotes median and Q3 denotes the second sub-median.
4.Now let us see how to do a box and whisker plot in box and whisker graph. Draw an ordinary number line which consists of all the numbers present in the given data set.
5.Find out the median and draw a vertical line just above the median present on the number line. Similarly locate the lower median and upper median and draw vertical lines above the sub-medians.
6. Join the vertical lines above the upper and lower median. This forms a box.
7.From the box, whiskers extend on both sides till it reaches the lowest number and highest number of the data set on the left and right side of the number line respectively. This forms the box and whisker plot.
Any set of data whose median and the range of data accumulation has to be calculated can be solved using box and whisker plot and it becomes an example of box and whisker plot. Box and Whisker Plot Online software is available so as to help anybody to draw the box and whisker plot.
