How to Cover a Cushion With Fabric
- 1). Measure the cushions dimensions and write them down. Measure across the pillow in both directions.
- 2). Add 1/2 inch to the dimensions. For example, if the cushion is 12 inches across in both directions, add 1/2 inch to 12 inches for a result of 12 1/2 inches for both directions.
- 3). Select the material you want to use to cover the cushion, and cut two pieces of the material to the adjusted dimensions.
- 4). Place one piece of the material down so that the good side is up. Place the other piece on top of it so that the good side is down. Line up the pieces so that they are even.
- 5). Place the material in a sewing machine and line it up to sew down one side. Sew the material so that the seam is 1/4 inch in from the side. Sew three of the sides in this way.
- 6). Turn the cushion cover to the fourth side and sew in from both ends a couple of inches using the sewing machine.
- 7). Remove the material from the sewing machine. Use the hole that is still in the fourth side to turn the cover inside out. Now the good side of the material is facing out on both sides.
- 8). Squeeze the pillow into the hole of the cover and adjust it with your hands until it is correctly fitted into the cover.
- 9). Pull the edges of the fourth side of the cover together, making sure to keep the 1/4 inch folds that you used when sewing the ends in a couple of inches. Either hand-stitch the opening to close it or use the sewing machine again. This stitching will be on the outside of the pillow, so make sure you use thread that matches the material.
