How to Help With Pencil Grip & Pressure
- 1). Hold the end of the pencil, just above the sharpened end, in a tripod grip. The tripod grip is formed with the middle finger, thumb and index finger. Place the middle finger underneath the pencil, so the pencil is resting on it. Use the index and thumb to grip the pencil just above the middle finger. Position the index finger just above the middle finger, and place the thumb just above the index finger on the opposite side of the pencil.
- 2). Grip the pencil with medium pressure. If blisters or red spots form on the fingers, you are gripping the pencil too tightly.
- 3). Avoid hyperextending the index finger, or bending the first joint from the base of the finger nail in or out when gripping the pencil. This can put unnecessary pressure on your index finger.
- 4). Curve the two additional fingers in the same direction as your index and middle fingers, but don't allow them to touch the pencil.
- 5). Lift your wrist up when writing. Allowing your wrist to drag on the table when writing causes excessive finger motion.
