How Do I Sign Up for the Military Without Talking to a Recruiter?
- 1). Visit the website of the military faction you wish to join. Online applications are available for Army, Army Reserves, Navy, Coast Guard and Marines. Completing the application online is the only step in which you will not deal with a recruiter.
- 2). Expect a call from a recruiter to set up an interview. He will want to meet you in person, have you sign formal paperwork of application and schedule you to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. This assesses basic skills and determines positions for which you are best qualified.
- 3). Take the ASVAB. If you score a 31 or higher, you will be allowed to continue the application process. If you score lower than 31, you can retake the test in one calendar month. The test can be taken as many times as needed to enlist, but the scores are used to determine placement and determine signing bonuses.
- 4). Visit the Military Entrance Processing Station, in which you'll complete the final phase of the application. You will be given a full physical examination, including vision, hearing and blood tests, drug screening and fingerprinting. You will most likely stay overnight near or at the MEPS. If you pass all of the tests, you will sign enlistment paperwork. If you fail any of the tests you can apply for a waiver from the test or be allowed to retest once, but if you fail again, you will be permanently disqualified.
