How to Make Friends When You Move Across the Country
- 1). Join a club or organization that you were involved with in your previous location. If you loved to socialize at your local fitness club at home, find a gym that offers similar group fitness classes and join. If you were a member of a book club, search for a local book club in your new town. Becoming involved in activities that you are already comfortable with will introduce you to other people with similar interests and passions.
- 2). Try something new. If you weren't involved with much in your previous location, get more involved in your new neighborhood. Try something you've never done before, like taking a cooking class or joining a karate class. You will meet a lot of new people and learn something new at the same time.
- 3). Keep an open mind when it comes to meeting potential new friends. If a coworker invites you out for drinks and she's not someone you would usually be friends with, give it a try. You may end up becoming best friends with her, or she may have other friends that you get along with.
- 4). Say nice things about people that you meet to other people instead of gossiping. Many people think that gossiping is a great way to form friendships. However, when people hear you gossiping, they probably wonder what you would say behind their own backs. So, compliment others and let others know how much you appreciate them and you will build a foundation of trust with your future friends.
- 5). Open up to other people and be inviting. Keep a smile on your face as much as possible and try to be that positive person that everyone loves being around.
- 6). Don't forget about your old friends. Send them postcards or give them a quick phone call to let them know that you miss them. With the technologies available today, you don't have to stop being friends with someone just because you've moved away. Plus, it is always easier to make new friends when you can rely on support from your old friends.
