If you've spent any time looking for cheap hosting space you'll notice a lot of terms and general lingo that is non-familiar to you and probably looking a lot like Greek.
Not to worry though, we'll go through 6 different terms that will help you grasp what particular companies are offering with their web hosting plan.
You'll be an expert in no time.
What is a Domain Name? Your domain name is the actual name or address that people will type in to get to your website.
An example would be Google.
com or EzineArticles.
com.
Without that domain name someone would either have to type in something like yourusername.
yourhostingcompany.
com to get to your site or they would have to type in an IP address such as 192.

What is an IP Address? An IP address is a unique number assigned to every computer that accesses the internet.
The web server that would hold your website also has an IP address so that people can find it on the internet.
Ever person or computer has to have a unique IP address.
  What is Domain Parking? Domain parking what you do to your domain name until you get your website up and running.
If you didn't park your domain name when someone typed youcompanyname.
com into Internet Explorer nothing would come up.
If you park your domain you could have a 'coming soon' page so people know that you website exists, but that you are working on getting it up.
What is Uptime? Uptime is exactly as it sounds.
It's the amount of time that you website is online and accessible the anyone on the internet.
Cheap hosting space companies will all say that they have 99.
9% uptime or 100% uptime.
It is a reference to the amount of time your website will be online.
Because of hardware and other unforeseeable problems it's very hard to have a website up 100% of the time.
If a hosting provider guarantees 99.
9% uptime that would mean that for 43 minutes out of every month your website would be down or inaccessible to the general public.
What's the difference between UNIX and Windows Hosting? This is referring to what operating system the server that is hosting your website is running.
UNIX is very common and extremely reliable, but there are some cases were you would want a Windows based operating system on your server.
One example would be if you were going to use Microsoft Frontpage to build your website.
What is a Dedicated IP Address? Now that you know what an IP address is we'll give you some examples of when you would want a dedicated IP address.
A dedicated IP address is an address that is only assigned to your website.
When you host your website with a cheap hosting space company they will put you and anywhere between 5 and 100 other people on your server.
It is called shared hosting space.
When you get a dedicated IP you are the only person on the server.
These usually cost a lot more, but make things like running credit card processing and other custom setups much easier.
