The ill effects of stress are real.
Stress elevates our blood pressure and causes our heart rate to go up.
It messes up our metabolism and our sleep.
It makes our skin look dull, which makes us look old.
It is even believed to contribute to several chronic illnesses such as hypertension and heart disease.
Unhealthy ways of dealing with stress can lead to more problems.
Some people resort to impulsive spending, while others cope with it by stress eating.
Stress can lead to problems in how we deal with other people.
When we are under stress, we are more likely to snap at others.
We are also less effective in our tasks because we are more likely to miss the obvious solutions to problems when we feel overwhelmed and stressed.
Stress is something that we all have to deal with.
It's unavoidable, but it's effects can be controlled depending on how we react to stress.
There are activities that we can engage in to elevate our tolerance to stressful situations so we don't give in to our impulses and react in unhealthy ways.
Aside from increasing our tolerance, we can also train ourselves to react better when under stress.
Here are some effective ways to deal with stress:
  1. Meditative exercises.
Any exercise is a great way to de-stress and to increase our tolerance to stress.
But meditative exercises are even better because they channel the mind and train it to release stress, to create a calm state of mind.
Doing meditative exercises like yoga, tai chi, and chi qong allows you to de-stress and to remain calm even when under stress.
  2. Art therapy.
Engaging in art whether it's painting, drawing, or performance art like dancing and playing instruments is a great outlet to channel stress.
Art challenges us to both think differently and to express our uniqueness.
This exercise in creativity and self-expression can help us find meaning in our lives.
    Meaningful work is less stressful.
  3. Better time management.
A lot of time, we bring stress upon ourselves because of poor time management skills.
When we allow ourselves enough time to complete our tasks and when we schedule our tasks accordingly, we avoid rushing and the stress of beating deadlines closely.
  4. Delegate.
Stress also happens when we try to do everything by ourselves.
    Learn how to delegate tasks.
Train other people to do things well, so that you can free yourself from some tasks, which makes you even better at the tasks that you leave yourself to do.
  5. Include breaks in your schedule.
When we create a schedule for ourselves, we should also incorporate break time.
Putting in these breaks can give us the breathing space that we need to keep stress from becoming overwhelming.
We should also allow ourselves to take vacations and visit new places.
  6. Spending time with family.
A great way to de-stress is to surround yourself with people you love.
Being in a supportive environment that allows us to be just ourselves can give us the much-needed space away from stress.
  7. Eat healthily.
A healthy diet helps in so many ways.
When we receive the proper nourishment, our minds and our bodies perform better.
A healthy diet is also one that is easier for our bodies to digest and makes use of, which reduces stress.
Finally, a healthy diet strengthens our bodies and help us fight the ill effects of stress.
