How to Obtain an IRS Tax Number for Reporting Income on an Irrevocable Trust
- 1). Apply online at IRS.gov. You can find the application by searching "How to Apply for an EIN" on the IRS.gov website. This is the preferred method because you receive your EIN immediately after submitting the application.
- 2). Apply by calling the toll-free EIN number, 800-829-4933, if you are located within the United States. International applicants will need to call 215-516-6999. These numbers are provided on the IRS.gov website under "How to Apply for an EIN."
- 3). Download Form SS-4 from the IRS website (see Resources). Fax the completed Form SS-4 to the IRS EIN Operation in Cincinnati, Ohio, at 859-669-5760. To use this number, your principle business, office or agency (or, in the case of an individual, your legal residence) must be in the 50 states or Washington, D.C. Otherwise, you will need to fax the form to the IRS International EIN Operation in Philadelphia: 215-516-1040. You should receive your EIN via fax in four business days.
- 4). Mail your completed Form SS-4 to the IRS EIN Operation in Cincinnati, Ohio: Internal Revenue Service, Attn: EIN Operation, Cincinnati, OH 45999. To use this address, your principle business, office or agency (or, in the case of an individual, your legal residence) must be in the 50 states or Washington, D.C. Otherwise, you will need to mail the form to the IRS International EIN Operation in Philadelphia: Internal Revenue Service, Attn: EIN International Operation, Philadelphia, PA 19255. You should receive your EIN by mail in about four weeks.
