The Amazing World of Gumball is a hit animated series on Cartoon Network. It follows Gumball, a cat, and Darwin, a fish, through all the ups and downs of attending junior high, and living with a quirky family. Gumball is quick-witted and creative. He's at an age where he spends nearly all of his time trying to be cool, and mostly failing.

Gumball is played by a young actor named Jacob Hopkins, who is no stranger to showbiz.

Jacob plays not only Gumball, but he also plays Chad Kemp on ABC’s hit show The Goldbergs. He is most recognizable for playing a part on a show that he isn't old enough to watch, namely Alexander Drew on Season 5 of HBO’s True Blood. He played a member of the authority, working with actors like Christopher Meloni and Alexander Skarsgard.

Possibly every kid dreams of making cartoons, but a lucky few get to do it. Jacob plays Gumball so well, with such great comic timing, that I was excited to have a chance to ask him some questions. Here he talks about what it's like to work on a TV cartoon.

What is your biggest challenge when you record lines for The Amazing World of Gumball?

"Hmmm, challenge... I never really thought about it. I just love every minute of it!"

You have more lines (and screams) than anyone else in the cast. How do you keep from exhausting your voice?

"My mom got me a great singing coach. Not only did Gumball start singing, but I learned breathing techniques, speaking from my diagram and placing my voice in different areas.

I do vocal warm-ups almost every day and definitely before I record. I really take care of my voice away from doing Gumball."

Do you record alone or with the rest of the cast? And do you like doing one more than the other?

"I get asked this a lot. You would think Gumball, Darwin and Anias record together, but we don't. Each of us, me, Terrell Ransom Jr. (Darwin), and Kyla Kowalewski (Anais) record separately. All of the other actors record in London, where the show's production team and studio are placed. I record in L.A., in a sound booth, Skyping with my voice director, Richard Overall who is in London!"

What is the coolest SWAG you've gotten for doing The Amazing World of Gumball?

"I went to the Nintendo Showroom and was gifted the New Nintendo 3DS XL Majora's Mask Limited Edition and the Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D before they came out. It was really cool!"

Do you ever attend fan conventions? And if so, do you have a favorite fan story?

"I haven’t done this yet, but I would love to attend Comic Con (in San Diego). It's on my bucket list!"

Do people recognize your voice when you're in public?

"[Laughs] No, not really, but when people find out I'm Gumball, they want me to do the voice for them."

If you could be any one of the other characters, who would it be?

"If you mean in The Amazing World of Gumball, I would have to say I would love to be Banana Joe for a day!"

Do you have a favorite episode, which one?

"There are so many good ones, but my favorite one is 'The Bros!'" (Gumball and Darwin think up a perfect day. But it turns out that Gumball wants to spend it with Penny, while Darwin wants to spend it with Gumball.)

Other than The Amazing World of Gumball, what's your favorite cartoon?

"I am a huge anime fan! I love Dragon Ball Z and Tokyo Ghoul!"

What would your dream role be (can be anything)?

"In the voice-over world, I would love to be a character with supernatural powers in a science fiction anime. In the world of live action, I would still like to be a character with supernatural powers!"
