Nigeria, a West African nation of more than 152 million people, has an education system influenced by its history as a British colony, an independence nation, and rule by a military dictatorship. Three types of public schools exist: indigenous, which teach skills passed down over generations; Quranic, which promotes religious duty for Muslims; and the formal European-type system, which is most prevalent today. Nigeria's adult literacy rate is 72 percent, according to UNICEF, with 63 percent of students enrolled in primary school and fewer than 40 percent of students continuing on to secondary school. Universities can be either state, private or federally funded. - Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University offers six education departments: agriculture, engineering, environment, management, science and technology education. Both undergraduate and graduate degrees are available at the university's two campuses. The 11,200-acre campus includes halls of residence for student housing and a medical center serving both students and faculty. Multiple research facilities, such as the Centre for Energy Research and Management Information System Unit, provide hands-on experience.
