When you find yourself with elevated cholesterol levels, without a doubt you will need a reduce cholesterol diet to help bring the numbers down to the normal range.
You can't take high bad cholesterol levels for granted, because then you will be at higher risk for strokes and heart attacks.
Still you are hesitant to consult with your doctor, fearing that you will be under cholesterol-reducing medications, which as you must have known can cause various untoward reactions, many of them severe, affecting major organs of the body.
Your doctor may not immediately recommend that you take anti-cholesterol meds unless your cholesterol levels are very high.
Most likely, your doctor will only suggest putting you on a reduce cholesterol diet and exercise regimen first.
The appropriate diet to reduce cholesterol will not include saturated fat because it is the saturated fat that increases the bad cholesterol in the body.
In truth, the body produces cholesterol so it cannot be bad, however eating foods high in saturated fat causes bad cholesterol to increase in number higher than normal, and that's no longer good.
That's why if you want to reduce your cholesterol you have to do something about all the food loaded with saturated fat which you have been eating for a long time and which have been occupying your pantry.
Junk foods, hot dogs, sausages and hams have to go.
Full-cream milk and butter are high in saturated fat, and must have to go as well.
If you are eating eggs everyday, you may have to limit your consumption of eggs to only twice or three times in a week, and as much as possible, don't fry the eggs.
If you are serious in your resolve to reduce your cholesterol, you need to have lots of fruits, vegetables, and fiber in your diet.
Many health gurus recommend eating fruits and vegetables in their raw or fresh form, as much as possible, because accordingly cooking reduces their nutritional values.
Eating vegetables raw is highly recommended, or at the very least just steam them or boil them.
If you ever feel the need to fry them, use olive oil, not vegetable oil.
It is ideal for fruits to be eaten fresh, not candied or sweetened.
Most vegetables and a number of fruits have fiber content.
Fiber reduces bad cholesterol by a large degree.
Psyllium, one of the richest sources of fiber, is especially beneficial.
Fish would be good for you, too.
Fish, especially the oily type, contains Omega-3 fatty acids which are well known to help maintain the good condition of the heart.
Eating fish at least three times a day can help reduce cholesterol.
If you don't like fish, talk to your doctor about taking fish oil supplements with Omega-3.
You won't be eating lots of red meat anymore now that you are resolved to bring your cholesterol levels down.
If you want to eat chicken, just make sure to remove the skin first.
