Many people are affected by snoring.
It is often over looked, but can be hazardous to one's health.
There are many different reasons why people snore.
The most common are: When the nasal cavities become blocked, throat and tongue muscles become too relaxed, a long soft palate or long uvula or bulky throat tissue.
Many times sinus infections can be the reason that nasal cavities become obstructed resulting in snoring, other times there may be deformations in the nose where the wall separating the nostrils changes.
Sometimes throat and tongue muscles become too relaxed causing them to collapse and fall back into the airway of the throat.
Often times this is a result of deep sleep, sleeping pills, or alcohol.
Sometimes aging also plays a role in over relaxed throat and tongue muscles.
A long soft palate or uvula can result in a narrowed opening from the nose to the throat which results in snoring.
Bulky throat tissue is the result of obesity but often time's children with large tonsils and adenoids can also be the cause of snoring.
People who snore on a regular basis can be at risk for serious health problems.
One of the most common is sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea can cause several problems including: long interruptions in breathing which can last for more than 10 seconds.
This is often caused by partial or complete blockage of the air passage.
Sleep apnea can cause one to awaken from sleep frequently, and is not always apparent.
It can also cause light sleep due to the fact that people with obstructive sleep apnea attempt to sleep lightly to keep throat muscles tense to allow regular breathing.
Sleep apnea can lead to higher blood pressure and enlargement of the heart.
This can increase the chance of heart attacks and strokes.
People who suffer from sleep apnea do not get a filling night of sleep and often times suffer from drowsiness the next day.
