A lovely combination of ethnicity, elegance and understated glamour typifies the customary dressing styles of Bengalis. Among the many tourists to this lively Indian metro, apparel shopping has always been extremely popular. Over here, we will acquaint readers with some basic style tips (for both men and ladies) to look the part, while on a visit to the City of Joy:

For HIM:
1. Punjabi - Ditch those crisp cotton shirts, and showcase your ethnic side in a Punjabi - the dress that is worn by the majority of men over here on festive occasions. You can take car rental in Kolkata to travel to Gariahat, where you will find several Punjabi stores. Accessorize with gold-chained buttons and a metal wristwatch. The Punjabi you don should ideally be of knee-length.

2. Dhoti - What blue denims are to a white shirt, dhoti-s are to Punjabi-s. Silk dhoti-s would be the best suited to boost the glamour quotient of your appearance - particularly if you are planning for a Kolkata trip during the Pujas. Cotton dhoti-s with designer borders are more popular for regular wearing. Getting out on a sightseeing tour in an imported car on rent in Kolkata, clad in dhoti-Punjabi, definitely has a feel-good factor!

3. Pyjama - These are your fall-back option, if wearing a dhoti seems a tad too tricky for you. You will find fitted pyjama-s at dress stores across the city, right from those at Hatibagan to the shops at Gariahat. Not quite as ethnic as a dhoti, but still has a distinct Bengali aura about it!

4. Footwear - Unless you are in Kolkata during the monsoons, leather boots should not feature in your holiday wardrobe. Avail of car rental service in Kolkata and visit any of the Bata or Khadim's outlets near the hotel/apartment you are residing at. If you are a stickler for traditionalism, 'Nagra' shoes might be the right pick for you. Walking about in them might not be particularly easy for everyone - and the flat palm shoes serve as a nice alternative.

For HER:

1. Saree - When you are in Kolkata, you definitely have to wear that six-yard wonder called sarees. There are several renowned saree stores in different parts of the city, and you can easily take luxury cars on rent in Kolkata to go on a shopping spree at any (or all!) of them. Choose matching blouses and petticoats with the sarees you purchase. If you find silk sarees to be a little difficult to manage, use pins.

2. Jewelry - Fashionable jewelry has always figured among ladies' overall get-up, and you get ample scopes to appear at your glittering best while in Kolkata. Purchase gold and/or silver jewelry from any of the reliable outlets in the city, like P. C. Chandra and Anjali Jewelers. For safely returning with the valuable jewelry pieces you have just purchased, availing of private car rentals in Kolkata would be advisable.

3. Bangles - Only wristwatches simply do not cut it - as far as accessories for the ladies' hands are concerned in this city. While gold/silver bracelets can lend a grand panache to your overall style - you can keep things simpler, by going for color-matched glass bangles. An ankle chain would also be nice!

4. Footwear - Right from floral flip-flops (for a casual outing), to glittering stilettos - you will find practically all types of ladies' footwear in Kolkata. If you have donned a saree, make sure that the ends of your dress are not getting tangled with the heels. For ensuring greater longevity, buy sandals/flats or heeled shoes of branded companies.

Keep a day out during your stay in the city, when you would take car hire in Kolkata, and go on an apparel-shopping binge. If you are not quite sure about the current Bengali fashion trends, referring to the style suggestions from magazines would help. Dress up in a true Bengali way while on a trip to Kolkata - and become a part of this lovely city!
