How to Fix a Water Heater Overflow

    • 1). Turn off the cold water supply valve above the tank. Simply rotate its handle until it is perpendicular to the supply line.

    • 2). Open any hot water faucet and allow it to run for a few minutes. It is not necessary to drain the entire tank.

    • 3). Remove the copper overflow pipe attached to the overflow valve. Grasp the knurled tip of the pipe with an adjustable wrench and twist the pipe counterclockwise until it detaches from the overflow valve.

    • 4). Grasp the body of the overflow valve with a pipe wrench and rotate the valve counterclockwise until it detaches from the tank.

    • 5). Wrap the threads of the new overflow valve with PTFE tape.

    • 6). Position the valve against the tank and tighten it with the pipe wrench.

    • 7). Pull the old PTFE tape off the threads of the overflow pipe, then wrap the threads of the pipe with fresh PTFE tape.

    • 8). Tighten the overflow pipe into the valve with the adjustable wrench.

    • 9). Open the cold water supply valve.
