Kemp was convicted in the May 1987 rape and murder of 34-year-old Johnnie Mae Gray in Fort Worth. Kemp, who had been released from prison five days earlier, hijacked a Transit Authority bus at knife point and forced the driver to drive around while he raped and murdered Gray, the only passenger.

She died from nine stab wounds to the chest and throat. The driver suffered a stab wound to the neck, but survived.
