Tips on Maintaining Your In Ground Pool

The thrill of a new pool may become overshadowed by the realization that it has to be kept up by someone.
Just like a pet or family member, the pool must be addressed as the need arises.
You can't simply wait until it is convenient to perform pool maintenance.
Establishing rules as to the use and upkeep of the pool from the start is the best way to prevent matters from getting out of hand.
Everyone who is old enough should understand how the pool system works and what has to be done to keep the water clear and healthy.
One of the primary concerns of the swimming pool is the condition of the water as to proper pH, cleaning, and providing chemicals as needed.
Generally speaking, most pools are checked on a weekly basis, which is okay when the pool is lightly used.
If a great deal of activity is taking place over two or three days straight, cleaning and refreshing the chemicals may be necessary more often.
It is much better to service your pool based on visual inspection than just setting one day of the week to do your maintenance.
As far as ways to reduce the amounts of chemicals used, there are two extra devices you might consider for your freshwater pool.
Water Ionizer Copper ionization of your pool water will effectively kill algae, reducing the amount of chlorine needed.
It will not completely take away the need for chemicals but it does help the water quality and is actually good for your skin at the same time.
Ozone Generator Some pool owners have gone completely to ozone generators in lieu of chlorine to purify the water.
This takes away some of the expense of maintaining a pool, after the cost of the equipment, as well as the time spent worrying with pH and adding chemicals.
Ozone is produced from oxygen and it enters the pool from the pump.
In Europe, ozone has been used for a hundred years to purify water, but some older equipment used in the United States does not do an adequate job.
Ionizers and ozone generators can be used in tandem so that chlorination is nearly eliminated.
Studies have indicated that chlorine is harmful to those who spend a great deal of time in the pool.
Using a Timer for the Pump The pool pump needs to rest at some point, and most owners have a timer installed to turn off the unit for some time each day or night.
Attempting to save money on electrical costs, many pool owners will curtail the hours that the pump runs to only a few per day.
This is not in the best interest of maintenance because the pump needs to recycle the water many times each day.
Generally, summer operations of your pump should be about ten hours each day.
In the winter this could be reduced to four to six hours.
If your pump doesn't run long enough, you will have more maintenance and the amount of chemicals you use will have to be increased.
