How to Reduce the Electricity Use of a Hot Tub
- 1). Turn the thermostat down to 85 degrees F or lower or turn it off during the summer or warmer temperatures. During colder months, set it at 102 degrees F to keep the water temperature comfortable but still effective in reducing energy consumption.
- 2). Turn off the power when the hot tub is not in use, especially when you are on vacation or not using the tub for an extended time. Do not turn the heater off completely during the winter months since the pipes can freeze; instead, follow the manufacturer's directions for the lowest temperature to maintain during cold temperatures.
- 3). Shut off water lights and jets when the hot tub is not in use. Use the jets less frequently; since they introduce air into the water, they also lower the water temperature.
- 4). Program the hot tub's thermostat timer to turn off during peak hours of energy use -- between the hours of 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The hot tub should still remain warm even if the heater is turned off for several hours.
- 5). Spray the filter with a hose every time you change the water. If the filter won't come clean, soak it in a filter cleaning solution overnight to dislodge dirt and other sediment. Replace the filter at least once a year.
- 6). Cover the hot tub with an insulated cover or a thermal blanket to keep heat in and reduce evaporation. Cover straps should latch snugly for the best protection against heat loss. Replace a deteriorated hot tub cover immediately, as it will leak heat at the seams and any other damaged areas.
- 7). Install a windbreak -- a fence or spa enclosure -- around the hot tub to prevent cold wind from reducing the water temperature.
