How to Refinish Cedar Plank Walls
- 1). Put on a face mask and ventilate the room well. Use an electric hand-held sander with fine-grit sandpaper to sand each wall down 1/8 inch. Sand until fresh raw wood is exposed.
- 2). Repair any holes in the wall using wood filler. Smooth the wood filler over the hole or damaged area. Allow the wood filler to dry for two hours. Lightly sand the filled areas using a piece of fine-grit sandpaper.
- 3). Use a soft cloth to apply stain to the first wall. Apply the stain to small sections of the wall, wiping off all excess quickly with a clean soft cloth. Apply a second coat of stain to each wall if desired once the first coat has been finished.
- 4). Fill a paint tray with polyurethane. Use a roller to apply a coat of polyurethane over the entire surface of each wall in the room. Use a small paint brush or an edger to fill in the corners and the edges. Use the poly to help protect the stained finish, and also to make the wall moisture-resistant.
- 5). Apply a second coat of polyurethane for maximum durability and protection. Allow the newly finished cedar plank walls to dry for 12 hours.
