How to Wire a CAT-5 Plug
- 1). Cut the CAT-5 cable to length using the cutting blade on the crimp tool. Use the stripper blade on the tool to strip one inch of insulation off the end of the cable. Cut off the nylon string inside the cable.
- 2). Untwist the paired wires inside the cable, and fan them out.
- 3). Align the wires from left to right, starting with the white wire with the green stripe, followed by the green wire. Place the white wire with the orange stripe next, then the blue wire. White with a blue stripe is next, and then orange. White with a brown stripe and then brown finish the sequence.
- 4). Keep the wires in the color sequence, and press them together to form a tight, flat ribbon of wires. Cut the ribbon of wires about one-half inch from the end of the cable jacket. Make sure the wires are square and in the right order.
- 5). Slide an RJ-45 connector over the ends of the wires with the locking tab facing away from you. Push the connector onto the wires until all the wires bottom out against the pins in the end of the connector. The jacket of the cable should slide inside the connector, underneath the crimp tab on the connector.
- 6). Push the RJ-45 connector into the crimper, while keeping the wires in place. Push the connector all the way into the crimper and squeeze the crimper handles all the way closed. Release the handles and pull the connector out of the crimper.
- 7). Examine the connection to make sure all of the wires are even against the end of the connector, the pins are all crimped evenly and the cable jacket is pressed under the crimp tab.
