Upper Falls of the Yellowstone

Stereographic images made the waterfalls look alive.

In this photograph titled "Upper Falls of the Yellowstone" Jackson's use of the stereoview format works very well. The rock formation to the immediate right of the waterfall stands out a bit when viewed in stereo, and the tree in the foreground helps to provide scale and perspective.
The fact that an entire series of stereoview cards were published with Jackson's images indicates that these views must have been quite popular with the American public.
