How to Get a Job at the DMV
- 1). First, go online to your states’ website and fill out the application. It could be possible to get an application from your local DMV, but many require the application to be downloaded and mailed in, or the application to be filled out directly on the site and submitted. There may be a few weeks to few months time frame before you hear back about the application depending on employment needs.
- 2). Next is the interview. The DMV will call and set up a time for an interview with the supervising license examiner. Practice your interview skills with someone beforehand and learn to sell yourself and your skills. Be prepared for open questions such as “What do you consider your greatest asset?” or “Why do you think you’d be good for this position?” Stay calm and talk concisely and clearly.
- 3). If the interview goes well you will then be asked to do a criminal background and finger print check. A clean motor vehicle record will also be required for this position in most cases. There may also be some aptitude test for things such as reading, math, and reasoning skills.
- 4). After you pass the checks and the required test you will be ask to fill out all of the insurance, health, and other associated paperwork. You will be required to sign non-disclosure papers stating that you will not talk about personal information you see. This is very important and shouldn’t be taken lightly. There are steep penalties for revealing personal information that you come in contact with during the course of the day.
- 5). In some instances there is a probation period in which you will be considered temporary. After whatever probationary time limit is over, if you have met all expectations, you will be offered permanent employment with the DMV.
