Goals and Values

As you move forward in your business or life for that matter, it is critical that you set goals that you will try to achieve. What is even more critical though is that you align your goals and values before setting out to achieve anything. The failure to align your goals and values can result in you obtaining results that you ultimately cannot be proud of.

The term 'selling-out' comes to mind when thinking of someone who has obtained a certain status or goal by ignoring their value system and doing whatever it takes to get the job done. This will many times lead to a very unfulfilling life and certainly a life that feels out of balance,

Here are 3 things you can check to see if you have aligned your goals and values:

1) The mom test: Is what you are doing, selling or trying to achieve something that you would be proud to share with your mother. As corny as this may sound, many adults perform business transactions or get involved with things that they would rather not tell their mother about. If this is the case with you, then you can be pretty sure that you have not aligned your goals with your values.

2) You would repeat the process: Ever been involved with something and you just can't wait to be done with it? Chances are what ever you were doing didn't align with your values. When your goals and values are in alignment, you can work with openness and confidence. You will usually be willing to repeat the process without giving it much additional thought.

3) You are proud of your accomplishment: If your goal was to make a million dollars and you achieved that but did it through selling pornography to minors, are you going to proud of your accomplishment? I hope not. This is obviously an extreme case but not an unrealistic one. This is a huge problem in our world so obviously someone is doing it.

The bottom line is we all have a value system. It's possible you've not sat down and given much thought to where you get your value system from but we all have one. If you haven't given thought to where you get your values I encourage you to do so. Then, when you set goals, you can be assured that your goals and values are aligned.
