Why Is Omega-3 in Fish Good for the Brain?
- Omega-3 has been proved to help the brain function. In the 1970s, researchers found that the Inuit people of Greenland were some of the healthiest people in the world even though their diet was high in fatty acids from salmon, whale and seal. However, this information led scientists to study the benefits of these fatty acids. Some benefits to the brain are an increased ability to learn new information and solve problems, focus better and improve memory skills. Omega-3 also helps with emotional stability and balance, including promoting positive moods and maintaining mental ability as humans age. Besides brain function, omega 3 also helps keep the heart healthy.
- In the brain, there are cells that send messages throughout the brain and to other body parts. These cells are called neurons. The membranes around these brain neurons are made up of "good" fat. For the neurons to do their jobs properly, the membranes have to be flexible so molecules can pass through. As human beings age and eat diets high in cholesterol and saturated fat, the membranes can stiffen and molecules can not pass through easily. This can result in mood imbalances and problems with thinking and learning. Omega-3 can restore these membranes surrounding the brain's neurons. Omega-3 can make the membranes more flexible and pliable, so the vital molecules can get through to the neurons. Omega-3 can also help the body's blood flow better and be less "sticky." Therefore, the brain will get more oxygen carried from the lungs to the brain.
- Omega-3 can be found in several foods, or it can be taken as a supplement. Foods with the most omega-3 are cold-water fish such as salmon, and flaxseed and walnuts. Other fish that contain these fatty acids are cod, shrimp, halibut and sardines. Some vegetables contain omega-3 such as spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, green beans and brussel sprouts. If you are not interested in eating foods full of omega-3s or you do not like many of these foods, you can get it as a supplement. Some companies make a powder that you can add to your favorite drink or to different recipes (see references below).
