What to Do When an LG Washer Won't Drain

    Drain Hose/Filter

    • If your LG washer isn't draining, clean the drain hose, household drain and the drain filter if clogged with debris. Remove clogs from home plumbing with plumbing tools or products. See if the drain hose is kinked, and straighten it. If the hose is badly bent or crushed, replace it. Verify that no more than 4 inches of the hose enters the tub and that no more than 4.5 inches enter the standpipe. The hose must fit firmly into the standpipe, but the connection must not be so tight that water cannot flow out of the hose.

    Pump

    • All washers have a pump that moves water out of the tub during the spin cycle. The pump can suck up objects or get clogged with debris. Unplug the washing machine, and remove objects with needle nose pliers. See if the pump pulley is frozen. If the pulley won't easily turn, replace it since you usually can't repair this part. Examine the pump, especially the impeller or housing. If the housing is cracked or parts of the pump are broken, get a new pump from a LG parts dealer.

    Timer/Pressure Switch

    • The timer advances the washing machine to the next cycle. If your timer is defective, your LG washer may not advance to the spin cycle. Water remains in the tub. The pressure switch or water level switch determines if your tub is filled with enough water. If it's defective, your washer won't start spinning. Disconnect the washing machine from the power source, and remove the main access panel. Test both switches for continuity with a multimeter. Replace the switches if they are defective. You normally can't repair switches.

    Home Power/Lid Switch

    • If your LG washer was spinning or draining and stopped, see if you have blown a fuse or tripped a circuit breaker. Change the fuse, or reset the circuit breaker. Restart the cycle. Check the power cord, and see if any wires are exposed. Repair or replace the power cord. The lid switch alerts the control board that the lid is shut. Your washer won't spin with the lid open. Unplug the washing machine, and remove the main access panel. If the switch doesn't have continuity, get a new one.
