Steps to Growing Grapes from Seeds

If you are just starting your grape growing venture, growing grapes from seeds is not exactly ideal. First, the grape seeds do not carry the characteristics of the grapes they came from, so you're not exactly sure what you will get. Second, it's a known fact that it takes a while for planted grape seeds to germinate and they also have a low percentage of germination. This is because they are covered by a thick seed coat, which keeps the seed dormant. But if you're feeling adventurous or don't have access to grape cuttings, here are steps to growing grapes from seeds.

First, you need to obtain the seeds. You can ask your local nursery for their available grape seeds, or simply buy some grapes from your local grocery and remove the seeds from them. Make sure not to buy the seedless variety.

When you have the seeds, plant them in a small pot with soil in it and then place them in a plastic bag. You can also choose to use a damp paper towel or peat moss to put the seeds in, which you also place in a plastic bag. Refrigerate this for 30 to 90 days, with the temperature ideally less than 40 degrees Fahrenheit. This would remove the seed's coat and allow the seed to grow. Make sure that the seeds don't freeze.

After this, remove the plastic bag from your refrigerator and place them inside your home in room temperature. Don't put it in a place exposed to direct sunlight, as this may cause the seeds to die. Around three to four weeks, you will soon see signs of growth.

Next, remove the plastic and place the plant on a windowsill or somewhere that exposes them to sunlight. Water them occasionally to keep them moist, but make sure not to drown them.

Once the plants have grown to about three to four inches, transplant them into individual pots or containers. Place them in a shady area and let the plants acclimate themselves to the outdoor conditions.

After 10 to 15 days, you can now plant them in their permanent position in your backyard, and then follow the steps in growing grapes from cuttings. Make sure to plant them in moist soil with adequate drainage that has good air circulation and sun exposure. You also need to build a trellis system around this time to ensure that your growing grapes from seeds will be adequately supported once they start to bear fruit.

Growing grapes from seeds can be difficult, but with hard work and effort, you'll surely be on your way to having a thriving vineyard.
