How to Be a Responsible Driver
Driving while intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, or prescription drugs is never a good idea. Many drivers think they have the ability to drive after a few drinks, but often don't realize until it is too late that their reaction time is slower and their judgment is impaired. Many innocent people become victims of drunk drivers every day. Drivers who know they will be drinking should have a designated driver or arrange for some other way to get home.
Distracted driving has become a big problem due to cell phones and other technological advances in cars. People who are talking on their cell phones, texting, or playing with their music devices are much more likely to be involved in an accident because of their distractions. In many states, it is illegal to drive while talking on a handheld cell phone or texting. Driving while extremely drowsy or tired is also dangerous and irresponsible.
Respecting the environment while driving can be accomplished in many ways. Drivers who only have short distances to travel should consider walking or biking. Drivers should carpool whenever possible or take public transportation. Many employers will reward their employees who carpool or take buses, trains, or subways to work. Cars should be up to date on all repairs and emissions testing to avoid spewing toxic gases into the environment. Driving a hybrid car is another way to protect the environment while still driving.
Drivers must share the road with pedestrians, especially in busy downtown areas. Pedestrians have the right of way when they are in a crosswalk with a walk signal. Even when pedestrians cross the street illegally, responsible drivers will allow them to pass safely.
Some drivers make poor driving choices or even make innocent mistakes that can have consequences for other drivers. It is important for all drivers to respect others and refrain from any type of "road rage" or retaliation if they are the victim of someone else's irresponsible driving.
