- 1). Get an unlock code and write it down. Your cell phone service provider may provide the unlock code under certain circumstances, such as if you have been a customer for a certain period. If not, you can get unlock codes or the tools to generate them from various web sources, some at no cost (see Resources).
- 2). Turn the phone off and remove the phone's SIM card. Most devices require that you remove the SIM card before you unlock the device in order to avoid configuration conflicts based on the information on the card.
- 3). Turn the phone back on and enter the code. The method of entering the code varies by device. In some cases, you may need to press a particular series of keys or combination of keys to get a dialog box where you can enter the code. In other cases there may be no visible dialog box at all.
- 4). Enter the unlocking code for your device. If you are using a set of codes generated by an unlocking utility, you may have to enter more than one code to find one that works. Most devices will display a confirmation message when you have entered a valid code.
- 5). Turn the phone off, then restart it. When you restart the phone, it will be unlocked.
