- The Sony NightShot Plus feature utilizes infrared technology to capture video while in the dark. The technology utilizes a small amount of electromagnetic radiation to send out a signal that can be seen in any amount of light. With this feature, it allows you to record video in complete darkness if necessary. Even if you are not in complete darkness, the infrared technology can make the image clear when you are in low light areas.
- The NightShot technology is very advanced for a consumer camcorder and it does an adequate job of allowing night time recording. When you want to record in the dark, simply switch the NightShot function on. This moves the internal glass filter, which is referred to as the IR Cut Filter. When this happens, it allows more light to go into the charge-couple device, known as the CCD. When more infrared light makes its way into the CCD, it creates more exposure for the camera, which allows you to see the image in the dark.
- When you turn the NightShot mode on, it also affects the shutter speed of your camera. As the shutter speed changes, it can impact the amount of brightness and and color in the picture. When you use this feature, it will automatically adjust the shutter speed depending on how much light available in the room. When the shutter speed is slowed down, it improves the level of detail in the color images that are taken with the camcorder.
- One of the advantages of this system is that it puts an emphasis on color images. In earlier models that use infrared technology, you would tend to see various shades of green when looking at the video footage. The NightShot technology and the automatic shutter speed feature allows you to see many different colors in the footage, though it won't exactly be as crystal clear as shooting in daylight.
